Species description: Crataegus ambigua is a Hawthorn native to western Asia and eastern Europe. This species produces white flowers, red fruits, buttery yellow fall color, and produce an interesting rough bark. The species responds very well to bonsai techniques by readily backbudding and handling root work well. Due to the several points of interest and their ability to respond to bonsai work well, Russian Hawthorn make excellent bonsai.
Specimen description: This Hawthorn has good radial roots and plenty of low branching. The future artist may choose between developing a smaller tree or choosing some of the low branches as escape branches to develop trunk thickness.
