Pinguicula care sheet

General
Tropical Pinguicula are primarily native to the mountains in Mexico, extending to parts of Central America. They grow on cliffsides, surrounded by dense fog. They can also grow on trees in warm, humid areas.

Sunlight
Pinguicula require 12+ hours of indirect sunlight for ideal growth and color, or equivalent with artificial lighting. We house some of our species (such as emarginata) near a windowsill that faces South and receives indirect sunlight.

Temperature
Pinguicula are tropical plants and prefer temperatures between 55– 85 F. Never let them freeze.

Humidity
Pinguicula prefer humidity within 45 to 80%. They do fine in typical household humidity. Higher humidity will facilitate larger leaves and faster growth, but is not necessary for a nice healthy plant.

Water
Pinguicula should be watered on a regular basis with low mineral water (under 50 ppm), they do fine with the water in the Colorado Springs area. You can keep them in a tray with 1-2” inches of water for the humidity and ease of watering, but any deeper is not good and may result in rot during the dormant/winter phase of the plants when it has stopped active growth. Do not allow your Pinguicula’s soil to dry out.

Soil
The soil needs to hold moisture, but also have plenty of space for air. A good mix is equal parts sand/perlite/ and either peat moss or coco coir.
